About this project
Team AfterImage worked with their client HEADROOM, an up-and-coming psychedelic rock band, to create a music video, BTS video, and promotional photography for their single Collateral, debuting in mid-April.
The music video’s narrative follows a man who walks into a bar to drink away his regrets, the HEADROOM band plays on stage while he takes a sip of a mysterious liquid and is suddenly transported to the middle of a hoodoo desert. As he scrambles in confusion and runs from the unknown, the band plays in his surroundings while he is transported to new realms from the bar. Reality slips more and more as he goes on, running from the unpredictable scenery and uncontrollable transportations, all whilst haunted by the band as he searches for relief.
Inspired by the look of kaleidoscopes, the hoodoo desert, projection art, and mixed media layering of images, the visuals we achieved in this music video are colourful, dynamic, experimental, and fun.
We raised just under 3K through crowdfunding to create this ambitious project, using the money for locations, special equipment, transportation, and crafty.
In the creation of this video, all group members pushed themselves to the best of their creative limits, trying our hand at unique lighting and camera techniques, an old VHS camera, and complex VFX we’ve never done before.
Through production we faced many challenges; Technical issues, securing 5 locations, working with the weather, coordinating client schedules, and directing a cast of up to 17 people on some days. But we always adapted and overcame every hurdle, dedicated to achieving our goal.
The BTS and official music video are still in progress as we are still working with our client on revisions before the official release.
Attached in the additional files is examples of the visuals we achieved and our process in their creation.
